Chapter Eight

“You’re the one who was so certain no one could have followed us,” Paige said. “So I ought to be able to do this without attracting attention. You need to stay here and wait for Rombart’s call. Maybe the guy’s name will give us something to go on. Until we know it, however…”

“I don’t think splitting up is smart,” Josh said.

“You don’t think I’m capable of looking out for myself.”

Maybe that was it, Josh admitted. All his protective instincts seemed to come into play where Daniels was concerned. After she’d left his apartment last night, he hadn’t been able to deny the conviction that she was in danger.

And when he’d arrived at the hotel and found her being manhandled, he’d been ready to kill. He remembered how sick he’d felt when he’d gotten his first look at what they’d done to her knees. Then later, when he’d sat down on the bed beside her, it had been so damn tempting to lean forward and cover her mouth with his own. It had felt as if doing that would have been the most natural thing in the world. Natural and familiar.

“I don’t know whether you’re capable of looking after yourself. Frankly, I don’t know a damn thing about you,” he said, frustration making his voice sharper than he’d intended. “You show up and tell me we were partners, and then all hell breaks loose. In case you didn’t notice, Daniels, those were real bullets they were using last night.”

“And one of the men who fired them is dead,” she said, as if his death had destroyed the threat. “We agreed that we need to find the name of a good hypnotherapist. There’s probably someone qualified right here in Atlanta, but it’s going to be tough to find them using only the phone book.”

“Tough maybe, but safe,” he said.

“I think the risk is minimal. And it is my risk.”

She was right. He wasn’t in charge of Paige Daniels. She claimed to be a CIA operative, and he didn’t know what the hell he was, Josh admitted. Or who he was. All he knew were the stories he’d been told. Directly conflicting stories.

“Stay in touch,” he ordered her, just as if he had the right. She nodded, the tension that had been in her face as she’d argued relaxing minutely. “And be damned careful.”
